Cthulhu Mythos and the Dream Cycle feature a large number of fictional deities. They are usually depicted as immensely powerful and, for the most part, utterly indifferent to humans who can barely begin to comprehend them. Some of these gods are worshipped by humans and non-human races.
Usually all the gods are divided to four groups:
- Great Old Ones (Cthulhu et al) - a loose pantheon of ancient, powerful deities from space who once ruled the Earth and who have since fallen into a deathlike sleep
- Elder Gods - benevolent gods that oppose Great Old Ones and help humans. It is possible that Great Old Ones and Elder Gods are representatives of some powerful extraterrestrial civilization, once been united
- Earth Gods - the "weak gods of Earth" that reign in the Dreamlands. They are protected by Nyarlathotep
- Outer Gods - the most powerful entities in the universe. They are cosmic deities that dwell in inconceivable dimensions beyond time and space.
